The family of Jake Marrington, who unexpectedly died last year aged 14, have fulfilled their wish to celebrate his life with a series of memorials at Jake’s favourite places.

They have also raised over £5,000 for Bright Stars, the Bury St Edmunds charity that supported Jake for many years. Jake’s mum, Lisa, said, “Some of the money we’ve raised will fund an annual BBQ for families to attend and the Jake Marrington cup to be awarded each year.”

Bright Stars supports children and provides their parents and carers with regular respite.

Jake’s memorials are now in place at High Lodge, Pony Trekking Thetford Forest, Bury Bowl and his school, Broadlands Hall. A young oak tree near the zip line at High Lodge, one of Jake’s favourite places, has been dedicated as a memorial tree.

“Normally, Forestry England doesn’t allow memorials,” explained Lisa. “We’re so thankful to the High Lodge team for working with us to create a space where we could include a picture of Jake. They’ve also helped make it possible for other families to do the same.”

Jake faced many challenges – including Autism, ADHD, dyspraxia and was diagnosed with Chung-Jansen Syndrome when he was 10, but his parents say he lived life to the full. He loved pony trekking and bowling, cheering on anyone who scored a strike and always had a smile on his face.

“Jake made the most of every minute,” said Lisa. “He had a real love for life and was a ray of sunshine despite everything he faced.”
