A memorial plaque has been installed on a footbridge in Thetford to celebrate the life of 14-year-old Jake Marrington, who sadly died last year. Jake’s family have valued memories of the area, having spent time there with him.

With the help of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), who own the land, the plaque was unveiled on Saturday, January 18th by The Mayor of Thetford, Councillor Chris Harvey.
Jake’s father Ian said: “Jake was a very special boy, but this event exceeds all expectations. We are so thankful to everybody concerned.”
He added: “This was a favourite place of Jake’s, he never tired of throwing stones into the river here.”
Along with other developmental conditions, Jake was diagnosed with Chung-Jansen Syndrome at the age of 10-years-old.
His mother Lisa said: “At the time the disorder was newly discovered with only around 30 cases diagnosed worldwide. It is caused by just a one letter error (out of 3.2 billion letters that make up the genome) in his DNA on chromosome six. It explained why he was delayed in meeting milestones and his disabilities. These included, Autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, dyspraxia, global development delay, reflux and hypermobility.”
“The syndrome, while a contributing factor, was not the reason Jake passed away. He had an underlying condition we had no idea about. Despite the challenges he faced, Jake would not let his disabilities define him, his personality and character shone brightly for all to see.”
She added: “He was an innocent soul, a social butterfly. He was naturally bubbly and charismatic. He was always smiling and happy. He really did live his life to the full and touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. We are beyond proud of you Jake and to have been your parents. We were so blessed.”

Whilst serving as Chair of Thetford Town Council’s Community and Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Terry Land was approached by the Marringtons for help.
He said: “I never met Jake, but I wish I had! It was immediately obvious to me that he was a unique individual who radiated love. I must pay tribute to Ian and Lisa Marrington who despite being devastated at their loss have behaved with the utmost dignity and thoughtfulness throughout.”
Both parents wished to express gratitude to agencies who have helped them cope with their loss.
In a joint statement, they said: “Thanks to everyone, including Paramedics, Air Ambulance, Police, BTO, Turners Funeral Service and Town Councillors who have supported us to honour Jake’s memory in this way. We are still fundraising for Jake’s favourite charity Brightstars.”
