This January, Slimming World have said goodbye to Syns, updating our language, and introducing a new group format that offers more support than ever before. Shani Yates from Slimming World Thetford shares more:

A posed indoor photograph of three women standing side by side in front of a plain black curtain, each holding Slimming World promotional materials. The woman on the left is wearing glasses and a grey hoodie and is holding an open leaflet titled “discover Slimming World kitchen,” featuring food photography, recipe imagery, and text about healthy, free food recipes. The leaflet is predominantly red and white, with icons and images of meals and ingredients. The woman in the centre is wearing glasses and a black top and is holding a spiral-bound book titled “essentially Slimming World,” showing a cover image of fresh food and a portrait-style photograph. She is holding the book with both hands at chest height. The woman on the right is wearing a purple jacket and is holding an open leaflet titled “touch hearts, change lives as a Slimming World Consultant.” The leaflet includes colourful text blocks and several small portrait photos of people near the bottom. All three women are facing the camera and smiling slightly, and the image appears to have been taken indoors under even lighting with no visible background details beyond the curtain.

We know the word syns can sometimes be misunderstood, and these changes are all about removing barriers and helping everyone achieve a healthy weight.

You’ll also see the introduction of a new category of healthy fats, such as nuts and nut butters, seeds, avocado and oils along with an even greater focus on the health benefits they provide. Members may choose three Healthy Extra portions daily from calcium, fibre, and healthy-fat options. They’re encouraged to vary their choices for overall wellbeing and include at least one calcium option each day to support adequate intake. This change has been made following a review of Slimming World’s plan by its Nutrition, Research and Health Department, which comprises a team of dietitians, nutritionists and researchers. It reflects current eating trends and aims to make it even easier for members to fit the plan into their real lives.

With the rise in the use of weight-loss medications, effective and evidence-based support like Slimming World is more important than ever. We want everyone to feel welcome and supported in our groups, whether they’re using medication or not. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan has helped millions of people lose weight over the last 56 years. It’s a flexible approach centred around Free Foods – foods that are naturally lower in energy density, meaning fewer calories per gram while being highly satisfying, so you can fill up on fewer calories.

There are more than 350 basic Free Foods you can enjoy to satisfy your appetite with no weighing or measuring required. Foods that are less satisfying and higher in energy density, such as alcohol, crisps, and chocolate will now be known as Swips (Slimming World Individual Picks). These foods are important because being able to enjoy your favourite foods without guilt makes the plan easier to stick to, so members can make lasting changes. You can still enjoy all your favourite foods without guilt, and we’ll show you how to get the balance right to make lasting changes.
