Hundreds of people gathered on Melford Common on Saturday 13th June as Thetford Town Council’s Groovy Party on the Common returned for a celebration of music, memories and community.

With a 1960s and 1970s theme, the free event featured live music throughout the day, including local performers, a Northern Soul and Motown DJ, and a headline set from Norwich funk band The High Points (pictured centre). Families also enjoyed a packed programme in the children’s area, alongside classic vehicles, fairground rides, and stalls.

Food vendors, bars, face painting, balloon modelling and roaming dinosaurs helped create a festival atmosphere, while many visitors embraced the theme by arriving in period dress. The event also raised money for local causes, with the Mayor’s raffle bringing in almost £300.
“I had a fantastic day at the Groovy Party on the Common,” said Mayor of Thetford, Vic Peters. “It never ceases to amaze me that with all the social media posts around fear and division, this town can come together as a community.
“Thank you to everyone who gave their time to perform or exhibit for the day, and to the large number of people that attended to enjoy it. But most importantly, thank you to the wonderful town team and volunteers that worked so hard to deliver this event and make it the highlight of Thetford’s events calendar.”
Thetford Town Council’s next family event will be Summer Fun on the Market Place from 27th – 31st July 2026.
