Thetford Town Council has announced the launch of Thetford’s first ‘Pocket Park’ as part of a wider initiative to tidy up and enhance community spaces across the town.

The first pocket park will be located in the town centre, next to the Carnegie, and will transform the area into a sensory garden.

Councillor Terry Jermy, a key advocate for the initiative, stated: “We all know of unloved spaces across Thetford that could be repurposed. Pocket parks are about turning these areas from something messy into something better, increasing biodiversity and creating havens for wildlife.”

The design, created by local contractor Roots & Routes, features a sensory-themed area with plants chosen for their various scents, textures, and sounds. It will also include species that attract butterflies and bees, supporting the Town Council’s conservation efforts.

The first phase of the project involves removing the existing paving, levelling the surface, and preparing the landscaping of the site. Following this, the Council will collaborate with community members, including residents and volunteers from Thetford in Bloom, to assist the contractors with planting. Once complete, the park will feature seating areas and other environmental enhancements, such as bird boxes and feeders.

This ‘Pocket Park’ is intended to be the first of several planned for Thetford. The Town Council is seeking support from Breckland Council to identify additional areas for future pocket parks.

Businesses and organisations are encouraged to take part in the initiative. Those interested in getting involved, joining Thetford in Bloom’s voluntary group, or supporting the Council’s efforts can contact the team via [email protected].
