A new group has launched at Thetford Library for people with type 1 diabetes and their families.

Jess Betts, founder of the new diabetes support group, with her daughter Quinn
Local mum Jess Betts established the group after her daughter, Quinn, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in August 2025. Since then, she has raised awareness of its common warning signs, known as the 4 Ts: toilet, thirsty, tired and thinner.
While fundraising for Diabetes UK and speaking to others affected, Jess found that many felt isolated or alone. She approached Thetford Library, which offered a venue for fortnightly Saturday meetings.
“We go to these meetings to make friends, discuss our journeys and have a safe space to vent about the frustrations or issues we have around type 1 diabetes, whether you have it yourself or have a loved one with it,” she said.
The group welcomes all ages and anyone interested in learning about type 1 diabetes. The library provides colouring activities and games for children, while adults can meet others who understand their experiences.
The sessions offer informal peer support only, and no medical advice will be given. Questions about diabetes treatment or care should be directed to the individual’s healthcare professionals.
The remaining meetings will take place at Thetford Library from 12 noon to 1pm on Saturday 19th September and Saturday 3rd October. The arrangement may continue beyond October if enough people attend.
Jess hopes the group will provide lasting support for the community, close to home and away from hospitals and medical appointments.
