The junior triathlon season is in full swing, and three young athletes from Thetford, members of Ethelwold Triathlon Club, have been embracing the challenge and thrill of multi-sport competition.
On Saturday 10th May, seven junior members of Ethelwold Triathlon Club joined over 180 athletes at the Saffron Walden Duathlon (Run-Bike-Run). Race distances varied by age group, and all participants showed determination and focus.
Samuel (age 9) completed a 1.2km run, 4km bike ride, and a final 400m run, placing 14th out of 62 in his category. Competing in his first regional duathlon, Samuel was especially proud of his performance, noting that his fast transitions, thanks to recent practice, made a real difference.
Emmett (age 7) made his multi sport debut with a 400m run, 1.5km bike ride, and 200m run. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he finished 3rd in his category, proudly taking home his first trophy. Emmett impressed both spectators and coaches with his speed on the bike and careful attention to transition rules, racking his bike properly and ensuring his helmet was fastened before continuing with the race.
On Sunday 18th May, the club was back in action at the Stradbroke Aquathlon/Triathlon. The morning featured the adult event, with Coach Pip placing 2nd overall and 1st in his age group, while Coach Malcolm finished 15th overall and 2nd in his category.
In the afternoon, four junior athletes tackled the Aquathlon (Swim–Run) format. James (age 10) completed a 160m swim and 4km run, placing 14th. Samuel took on a 120m swim and 1.5km run, finishing a strong 5th. Emmett once again impressed in the Tristart category, completing a 40m swim and 500m run—earning his second 3rd-place trophy in as many weeks.
