Taking the pressure off blood pressure: Stress-free pet checks

As pet owners, we want our furry companions to thrive. Yet some health concerns, like hypertension (high blood pressure), can be silent dangers, quietly affecting their well-being. This condition can impact both cats and dogs and often points to an underlying health issue.

Pets can have regular or essential checks in the comfort of your home

High blood pressure in pets is usually caused by a secondary condition. Common causes include kidney disease, hyperthyroidism in cats, diabetes, and Cushing’s disease in dogs. Early detection is vital for managing both hypertension and its root cause. Left untreated, high blood pressure can damage vital organs such as the eyes, kidneys, brain and heart. Pets often show no obvious signs until significant damage has occurred, so regular monitoring, especially for at-risk animals, is essential.

Blood pressure measurement is non-invasive, but many pets suffer from white coat syndrome, where stress in an unfamiliar clinic inflates readings, making it harder for vets to get an accurate picture. A calm, familiar home environment can make a big difference. Relaxing in their own bed helps pets feel at ease, reducing anxiety and leading to more reliable blood pressure measurements.

As a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), I provide professional, stress-free blood pressure monitoring in the comfort of your home. All monitoring is carried out under direct veterinary instruction. If your primary vet suspects hypertension or recommends checks due to an existing condition, they may refer you to me. I work closely with your vet to provide accurate readings that help them diagnose and manage your pet’s health.

If you have concerns about your pet’s health, particularly if they have an underlying condition, it’s important to discuss them with your primary surgeon.

They can assess your pet’s needs and decide whether blood pressure monitoring is advised.
