Thank you to local photographer Ray Thompson for sharing these photos of Thetford’s VE Day events!

The Town Council’s events marking 80 years since the end of World War Two in Europe were a roaring success, with the town turning out to celebrate, and remember those who fought for Britain’s freedom.

VE Day was marked by a day of commemorations on the marketplace with a wreath laying ceremony before the national two-minute silence at 11am. Local artist Joey La Meche started his live mural painting sessions (the finished mural is currently on display at Thetford Garden Centre), and the lighting of a national beacon at 9.30pm.

Saturday 10th May saw a ‘Party on the Common,’ the first major town event on Melford Common for many years. The sun shone, an afternoon of live music entertained the community and local businesses and Thetford Town Council joined together to create a party to remember.

The 80 Stories Tent proved popular with an exhibition featuring stories of local residents who lived through VE Day in 1945.

Councillor Vic Peters, Deputy Mayor of Thetford Town Council, said, “The VE80 Party on Melford Common was a truly special day for our community. It was wonderful to see residents of all ages come together to honour such an important moment in history. The sense of pride, remembrance, and unity was clear to see. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped organise the event and to all who came to celebrate – your support made it a memorable occasion for us all.”
