Preparations are continuing at Thetford Town Council for a series of celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of WW2, and there are still opportunities to get involved.

The Council has been collecting stories from local residents about their memories of the war through a project titled 80 Stories: Thetford’s Memories of the War. This initiative has captured both heart-warming recollections and heartbreaking accounts of those who experienced loss and despair during this tumultuous period.

One local resident, Maureen, born in 1941, shared her childhood joy upon seeing her father return from the war with his haversack on his shoulder, contrasting with her sadness over the family dog not being allowed to join her and her mother in the air raid shelter.

The Council is still seeking anyone with first-hand accounts of the war or stories about their family’s participation in the war effort. You can read the stories gathered so far on the Town Council website. If you have a story, contact: [email protected]

As part of the town’s celebrations, the Council will host a Party on the Common. This event will take place on Saturday 10th May at Melford Common and will feature live bands, dancing, a bar, and various food stalls. There will also be an appearance from Dad’s Army, a face painter, and a funfair provided by L Gray and Sons.

The Council is inviting local businesses to sponsor this free family event and is offering a low cost sponsorship package. For more information visit: www.thetfordtowncouncil.gov.uk/VE80
