The team at Mencap Foxglove in Thetford are continuing their fundraising efforts to complete a new sensory room for residents, with a Spring Fair on 18th April to help support the project.

Four smiling women stand together outside a brick building, wearing name badges on pink lanyards. One is dressed in a grey Adidas hoodie, another in a red top, one in a green T-shirt with a cartoon face design, and another in a black sleeveless top. They appear to be part of a care or support team, standing close together and posing happily for the photo.

The event will take place on Saturday 18th April from 11am to 2pm at the Riversdale Centre on Tanner Street. Visitors can expect a range of craft stalls, a tombola, cakes, live singing and a Zumba demonstration, alongside a variety of activities for all ages.

Mencap Foxglove provides round-the-clock care for five people with complex needs, including autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, in a bungalow in the town centre. The sensory room will offer residents a calming space to relax and express their creativity.

Following earlier coverage in About Thetford, the team secured significant funding for the project. Tracey Foster said: “We are so excited and grateful to say we have been awarded £3,500 towards our sensory room from Havebury and £5,000 in a grant from Breckland Council.”

The team recently welcomed representatives from Havebury Housing to see the progress so far.

A softly lit sensory-style room illuminated in purple and pink ambient lighting. In the centre is a cushioned lounge chair with a pillow, positioned facing into the room.On the left, a tall bubble tube lamp glows with shifting light, next to a windowsill holding small decorative items and a speaker. Above the window, a neon-style sign reads “GOOD VIBES” in multicoloured letters. The window is fitted with a striped blind, and trailing artificial greenery decorates the top.At the back of the room, a narrow window is framed with more hanging greenery, and butterfly wall decorations are arranged across the wall. A vertical light strip casts a soft pink glow beside the window. On the right side, a small storage unit and a white bin sit against the wall, with additional soft furnishings nearby. The room has wooden flooring and a calm, cosy atmosphere, suggesting a relaxation or sensory space designed for comfort and wellbeing.
Current progress on the sensory room

Plans for the room include water-effect flooring, a small paddling area, soft-play equipment, and speakers and a projector to display calming images or family photographs. The project is now underway, with equipment ordered and refurbishment in progress.

Previous fundraising efforts have also contributed, including a two-day collection at Karvin’s Budgens on Anchor Place, supported by the Mayor of Thetford, which raised £872.
