Mencap fundraising for sensory room for residents

An assisted living community in Thetford is raising funds to create a sensory room for its residents.

Four smiling women stand together outside a brick building, wearing name badges on pink lanyards. One is dressed in a grey Adidas hoodie, another in a red top, one in a green T-shirt with a cartoon face design, and another in a black sleeveless top. They appear to be part of a care or support team, standing close together and posing happily for the photo.

Mencap provides round-the-clock care for five people with complex needs such as autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, in a bungalow in the town centre. The new space would give residents a place to relax and express their creativity.

“Just because our residents have disabilities doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have a life like everyone else. We want to give them access to experiences that some people take for granted,” said support worker Tracey Foster.

“Challenging behaviour can also lead to residents attempting to harm themselves and others. We think a sensory room will be ideal for providing a safe space if residents want to chill, away from people. One resident, for example, just loves listening to ABBA!”

Plans for the new room, currently a storage cupboard, include water-effect flooring, a small paddling area, soft play equipment, plus speakers and a projector to display calming images such as family photographs.

Several specialist companies have already offered free quotes. An inaugural coffee morning raised £277, but more support is needed to reach their target.
