Preparations are in full swing at Thetford Town Council, with less than a month to go until the community comes together for a special event: the VE80 Party on the Common.

Six performers from the East Anglian Swing Troupe pose outdoors at a 1940s-themed event. The three men wear white shirts, red ties, black trousers, and braces. The three women wear white blouses with red flared skirts and red lipstick. Behind them are vintage military vehicles, including a jeep, and a green tent. A sign nearby reads “THIS ROAD IS OPEN COURTESY OF THE 41st ARMORED INFANTRY.”

These vibrant celebrations will take place on Saturday May 10th, noon to 5pm on Melford Common in Thetford. The vibrant community gathering will transport visitors back with an event reminiscent of the street parties held in 1945. The event will offer a day full of live music, dancing, delicious food, and historical reflection.

The stage will feature nostalgic performances from Charlie Wilson, Sam Trayton, The Lindy Hoppers and headliners The Swing and Jive All Stars, who will bring classic wartime tunes to life. Visitors can enjoy refreshments from a fully stocked bar and food stalls, including an ice cream van, and cakes and bakes from Puddin, alongside Winter Catering’s popular loaded fries and hog roast.

Families can look forward to a range of activities, including funfair rides provided by L. Gray and Sons, face painting from All that Glitters, and appearances by members of Dad’s Army Thetford.

Reflecting on local wartime experiences, the Thetford Memories of War tent, part of the Town Council’s 80 Stories project, will offer a poignant tribute to the community’s heritage.

Everyone is encouraged to dress in 1940s attire and join in the spirit of the occasion—whether you’re dancing to the sounds of big band jazz, exploring local history or simply enjoying the sunshine on the common, with a family picnic.
“This promises to be a truly special day,” Town Councillor Vic Peters commented, “VE80 is not just a celebration of the past but also an opportunity to come together as a community and honour the memories and stories that have shaped us.”

Admission to the event is free and open to all. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unforgettable celebration! VE80 Party on The Common is organised by Thetford Town Council and is sponsored by Grow Indoor Plants, Location Location Thetford, West Suffolk College, Baxter Healthcare, and Pigeon.
