Ancient House Mummers bring centuries-old tradition to life in Thetford

A newly formed Mummers group based at Ancient House Museum made its debut this summer, bringing a centuries-old theatrical tradition to life in Thetford.

Seven people pose together in colourful costumes inside Ancient House Museum in Thetford, including characters dressed as a knight, a dragon, a historical figure and townspeople.

The group was formed by local artist and museum volunteer Dan Morgan, with performances planned as part of the museum’s summer programme.

Mummers’ plays have their roots in the 14th and 15th centuries and were commonly performed in great houses during Tudor times. Traditional characters include Old Christmas, St George and a doctor who famously brought characters back to life.

Dan’s script combines classic mummers’ traditions with local history. Alongside St Edmund, St George and his dragon, Dolly, Old Christmas and the Doctor, the cast features Thetford historical figures including Betty Radcliffe, Thomas Paine and Harry Bensley.

The group has designed and created its own costumes and props using recycled materials. The dragon’s head may look familiar, as it was previously seen in a window display at the museum. Inspired by Morris dancing, each character is distinguished by colour.

“It’s all a bit panto,” said Dan, “although the St George fighting character is an essential part of a mummers play. St Edmund was the original patron saint of England, so we’ve returned our St George back to his Turkish roots.”

Audiences are invited to help St George defeat the dragon by throwing newspaper ‘rocks’ during performances.

Ancient House Mummers Group meets every three weeks and is already looking ahead to future productions. Dan is currently working on a new script and hinted that Jack in the Green, also known as the Green Man, may make an appearance in the next show.
