Age UK Norfolk is launching a new campaign this June aimed at helping older people across the county stay connected and supported during the summer months.

The campaign, titled Together This Summer, focuses on friendship, community and tackling loneliness in later life. While summer is often associated with social events and activities, the charity says the season can also be an isolating time for some older people, particularly when routines change or families travel away on holiday.
Launching during Volunteers’ Week, the campaign will also celebrate the volunteers and community groups who help older residents across Norfolk maintain social connections and independence.
During 2025–26, volunteers at Age UK Norfolk contributed more than 9,800 hours of support across the county.
As part of the campaign, the charity has shared the story of 88-year-old Liz, who lives alone with her dog and receives support through Age UK Norfolk’s Gift of Friendship service.
Working on jigsaw puzzles alongside a volunteer helped improve Liz’s confidence and motivation, while regular conversations became particularly valuable following a fall last November.
“I feel better about myself now and more motivated,” Liz said. “I feel that my confidence has improved significantly, and I feel more optimistic about the future.”
Liz is now hoping to build her confidence further by using the charity’s Travel Companion scheme to visit her daughter in Norwich independently by bus.
Jo Asbury, Head of Community and Wellbeing at Age UK Norfolk, said: “We know that meaningful connection can have a huge impact on wellbeing and confidence.

“This campaign is about celebrating the kindness, friendship, and community spirit that already exists across Norfolk — and encouraging even more people to get involved.”
The charity is encouraging residents to support the campaign by volunteering, donating, or simply checking in on older neighbours, friends or relatives.
