AccessibiliTEA – the friendly group to support those with health issues and disabilities in Thetford

Every Friday lunchtime, a warm welcome awaits at Thetford Methodist Church. From 12.30–2.30pm, AccessibiliTEA opens its doors (ring the bell if it’s locked) to create a relaxed, judgement-free space for people living with health issues or disabilities.

A group of older adults sit around a rectangular table in a brick-walled community hall, raising mugs of tea in a friendly toast towards the camera. The table is covered with a green polka-dot cloth and set with plates, biscuits and papers. Red chairs surround the table, and in the background are a piano with flowers on top, windows with patterned blinds, and a clock on the wall, creating a warm, welcoming setting.

Originally launched in 2024 with three months of funding from the Keystone Trust, the group quickly proved its value. After a summer pilot was run in 2025, AccessibiliTEA now runs from January to May, restarting again in September. Thanks to grant funding from the Norfolk Community Foundation’s Love Norfolk Fund, the group is secured through 2026.

Organiser Christine Lincoln developed the idea as a low-key alternative to more formal support services. Gentle chat, a chance to share a problem, and a gathering of friends is at the heart of AccessibiliTEA. It’s also a perfect place for signposting and practical help.

Three older women stand side by side in a brick-walled community hall, smiling at the camera. All three wear lanyards with name badges, and two are dressed in purple tops featuring the enABLE Thetford logo. Behind them are patterned window blinds, a “No Smoking” sign on the wall and red chairs, suggesting a welcoming community group setting.

Members speak warmly about the impact. Donna describes it as “a safe place… somewhere we can go and talk.” Volunteer Wendy, who has been involved for over a year, says, “The group gives me a chance to meet people and make friends. Laughter is a big part of our group.” Pauline adds, “AccessibiliTEA gives me something to look forward to. I live alone, and my family live away.”

Friendships formed here often continue outside the sessions, something the team sees as a real success. Volunteers also support EnAble’s fundraising drives and annual Wellbeing Fair.
