Following its Gold Award win at the 2025 Anglia in Bloom awards, Thetford Town Council have agreed an ambitious plan to support cleaner, tidier neighbourhoods across Thetford’s estates.

Cllr Terry Land, Cllr Terry Jermy and Community and Environmental Services Manager Nick Thompson
At the Council’s recent budget-setting meeting, members approved the creation of a new full-time Community Ranger role. The post will work alongside residents to address issues affecting the appearance of estates, complementing the existing Town Team which maintains public open spaces and environmental hotspots.
The role has been driven by long-standing Town Councillor Terry Jermy, who is also an MP: “For too long our existing communities have been forgotten,” he said. “Whilst the Town Council is not responsible for these areas, we cannot allow them to continue to deteriorate. Residents tell us they are sick and tired of their communities looking untidy. This new role gives us the capacity to start turning things around.”
The initial focus for the Community Ranger will be St John’s Way on the Redcastle Furze Estate, following a recent walkabout by councillors and officers to identify priority actions. Recruitment will begin shortly, with the successful candidate expected to start in spring. The Community Ranger will also work alongside volunteer groups supported by the Town Council, including Thetford in Bloom and the Thetford Conservation Group, which support planting, litter picking and conservation work across the town.
