New Year – New You! January is a time for New Year’s resolutions and new hobbies, and Ancient House is offering plenty of opportunities for people of all ages to try something new.

A magazine-style promotional image showing an activity taking place inside a historic timber-framed building. The scene is set in a wood-panelled room with exposed beams, leaded windows and a patterned tiled floor. In the centre, a man sits cross-legged on the floor, leaning forward and gesturing as he explains something to a young child seated opposite him. The child sits on the floor with a pencil and worksheet, listening intently. Two adults crouch nearby, watching and engaging with the activity, while another adult stands slightly behind them holding a folded leaflet or model. On the floor in the foreground is a large framed board with strings and markings laid out, suggesting a hands-on learning or investigative activity. In the background, a doorway leads to another room where a visitor can be seen, and a framed historical portrait hangs on the wall above a wooden display stand, reinforcing the heritage setting. Natural light streams in from a window on the left.

Their popular bookable workshops for children who are educated at home are returning once again. A full programme of nine workshops is planned for 2026. The first session will focus on Thomas Paine, marking his 290th birthday on Thursday 29th January. Other topics throughout the year include Toys and Games, the Iron Age, archaeology and the First World War.

For adults there is a great afternoon talks programme offering 11 talks across 2026 with topics including Thetford Treasure, European Deserts, Tudor gardens and the Anglo-Sikh Wars. Talks are £5 per person or free for Ancient House Friends. Membership costs £10 for adults, children (5–15 yrs) are £5. Family membership is £20, for 2 adults and up to 3 children. Pick up a form at the museum.

A series of art workshops will be run on Saturday 31st January, 28th February and 28th March from 10.30am to 3pm. Enjoy making art inspired by the artefacts and lives of the Duleep Singh family, with community artist Rachel Duffield. Places are free thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Following a successful workshop on Saturday 17th January, there is also a chance to learn how to make linocuts on Saturday 21st March for just £2 per adult – explore the museum for inspiration and be guided through the process of creating, carving and printing designs that can then be taken home.
