Ho-Ho-Ho or Oh-No-No? Keeping your pets calm this Christmas

While we love the hustle and bustle of Christmas, our pets can find the upheaval incredibly stressful. Loud noises, strange smells, new decorations, and a revolving door of visitors can turn Christmas into an anxiety-inducing ordeal.

Here’s how to ensure your beloved pets enjoy a calm holiday season:

Provide a safe space: this could be a spare room, a quiet corner with a comfortable bed, or their crate covered with a blanket. Ensure this spot is away from the main festivities, with fresh water and a favourite toy. For cats, a high perch or a private hideaway box is ideal.

Dogs: When visitors arrive, consider having your dog on a lead initially or in their safe space until they calm down. Ask guests to approach calmly. If your dog is highly anxious, pre-empt visitors by placing them in their quiet zone before guests arrive.

Cats: Let your cat choose when and if they interact with guests. Never force interactions. If they prefer to hide, respect their choice.

Noise: Keep music at a moderate level. If you anticipate loud celebrations, consider background white noise or classical music in their safe space.

Try to maintain regular feeding times, walks, and playtime schedules. Even small deviations can add to stress. A familiar walk for dogs or a consistent play session for cats can be a grounding experience amidst the holiday chaos.

If managing your pet’s anxiety feels overwhelming, or if they need regular treatments that add to their stress with clinic visits, remember the Pawtable Veterinary Nurse is here to help.
