Breckland District Council has unveiled plans to almost double the footprint of Thetford by 2042, as part of its new Draft Local Plan now open for public consultation.

According to the draft proposal, Thetford’s expansion would extend nearly two miles along Thetford Road on the north side of the A11, bordering Wretham Heath Nature Reserve, with additional land earmarked along Kilverstone Road to the east. The proposed “Kingsfleet Grove” development would cover nearly 4 square kilometres, in addition to 2.5 square kilometres already under construction, delivering up to 5,000 new homes in total.

The Local Plan outlines how the district will meet Government housing targets and shape future growth. Breckland Council is inviting residents, businesses, and community groups to share their views on where new homes, jobs, and infrastructure should go.

Under the Thetford Area Action Plan, new developments must include 25% affordable housing, new road connections and sustainable transport links, and additional schools. Proposals are also required to minimise the loss of trees and increase biodiversity across the development area.

Plans also include construction of a new care home, and retain a reserved site for a second railway station, first suggested in 2010.

“This is your plan, your future, and your chance to have your say on how Breckland should grow,” said Leader of Breckland Council, Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen.

“The Local Plan will guide where new homes are built, where we create jobs, and what we protect for generations to come.”

The consultation closes at 23:59 on Monday 15th December. Find more information on the draft local plan, and have your say, at www.breckland.gov.uk/local-plan-2025.
