Keystone Trust, in partnership with Breckland Council, is relaunching an exciting initiative, The Rickshaw Project, designed to bring joy, companionship, and freedom of movement to those in the community who need it most.

A smiling cyclist pedals a bright purple trishaw with an orange canopy, carrying two passengers who wave cheerfully at the camera. The passengers, dressed in light summer clothing, appear to be enjoying a sunny ride through town. The side of the trishaw reads “CHAT VANARAM.”

Based at Riversdale in the town centre, the electric pedal-assist rickshaw will take passengers on short trips around Thetford. Research shows loneliness affects more than 3.3 million adults across the UK and can have a significant impact on both mental and physical health.

Loneliness is a serious public health issue, with over 3.3 million adults in the UK reporting they feel lonely “often or always,” particularly older people and those with limited mobility. Research shows that loneliness can be as damaging as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, increasing the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and heart disease.

The Rickshaw Project aims to tackle this by offering free rides, helping individuals enjoy fresh air, meaningful conversation, and a renewed sense of connection. With the first rickshaw funded by Breckland Council, rides from local care homes will begin shortly. Looking ahead to next summer, there are plans to expand the project with scenic routes and river tours, turning every journey into a joyful and memorable experience.

Thetford’s first rickshaw, named Boudicca, was funded by Breckland Council and will rely on volunteers to help deliver the service.

The scheme is urgently looking for both volunteer riders and “chatty chums” to support passengers during journeys.

Riders will operate the electric rickshaw, with the pedal-assist motor meaning volunteers do not need to be experienced or particularly strong cyclists. Chatty chums will accompany solo passengers, providing friendly conversation and companionship throughout their trip.

Organisers say volunteers only need to give around two hours of their time to make a real difference to someone’s day, with full training and support provided for all roles.
