As part of the VE80 commemorations, a special live mural will be created by local artist Joey La Meche, who was born and raised in Thetford.

Three men stand smiling inside Thetford Garden Centre, surrounded by colourful spring plants and flowers. In the centre is the Mayor of Thetford, Chris Harvey, wearing a light blue shirt and his ceremonial mayoral chain. On the left is Julian Chittock in a blue shirt and dark trousers, and on the right is Joey La Meche in a cream jacket and trainers. Behind them, a banner reads “Thetford Garden Centre” and lists various gardening departments.

Known across the UK for his impactful mural artwork, Joey will return to his hometown to produce a live mural on Thetford Market Place on Thursday, May 8th 2025. The piece will be painted in honour of the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and will evolve throughout the day. Joey will be working live from 12 pm to 3 pm and then again from 4 pm until 8 pm, finalising the artwork as the community begins to gather for the town’s beacon lighting.

The mural project has received generous sponsorship from local business Thetford Garden Centre. Operations Director Julian Chittock commented, “We are really pleased to be supporting Thetford Town Council, Joey La Meche and the local community with this project as part of Thetford’s VE Day celebrations. We are excited to have the opportunity to display Joey’s work here at Thetford Garden Centre in the coming weeks.”

Once completed, the mural will be showcased at the VE80 Party on The Common on Saturday, May 10th, offering the community a moment to come together, reflect, and celebrate this significant anniversary. Following the events, the mural will be put on display at Thetford Garden Centre for continued public enjoyment, before it is relocated to a more permanent home later in the summer.

Councillor Chris Harvey, Mayor of Thetford, added, “This mural is not only a tribute to those who served, but also a celebration of Thetford’s creative spirit. We are thrilled to have Joey bring this vision to life in our town centre and to have him join us as part of our VE80 Commemorative Events.”

Residents are invited to join the commemorations on Thetford Market Place on May 8th to witness the mural being brought to life, and again on May 10th on Melford Common to celebrate VE80 together as a community.
