A rich curriculum plays a vital role in shaping young people’s lives. Learning about local and global cultures, and the many ways they are celebrated, fosters a love of lifelong learning and deepens a sense of belonging within the community.

A group of children, wearing backpacks and colorful clothing, walk in a long line through a lush green forest filled with ferns. Sunlight filters through the tall trees as they follow a well-trodden path, some of them wearing matching orange tops, suggesting a school or group outing.

Thetford has a rich history to be proud of, and celebrating this has been a key focus of local educational projects. One initiative is Thetford Powershift, a Local Cultural Education Partnership supported by the Arts Council, working to benefit all children and young people in Thetford.

The partnership launched its first all-schools event in 2022 with a production of Hansel and Gretel set in Thetford Forest. Families walked through the woods, guided by Thetford Academy students narrating the story, creating a magical experience. Since then, Thetford Powershift has run projects in design technology, dance, poetry and music, with support from organisations such as Creative Arts East, Jump In and the Royal Ballet Opera House, which have provided free training for teachers. Events have taken place at Thetford Library, the Carnegie and through the Lantern Parade in town and Frederick’s Wood at Christmas.

The Book of Thetford, funded by Norfolk & Norwich Festival and produced by children about their town, was one of the partnership’s most notable achievements. The book captures what the children love about Thetford and includes a poignant chapter imagining a new street that reflects their hopes for the future. In the coming year, Thetford Powershift will launch a new project celebrating every child’s identity.

A large group of children in school uniforms and two adults in blue vests celebrate on a stage, raising their arms in the air. A man kneels at the front, smiling, while a young girl in a brown cardigan stretches her arms wide. Behind them, a man in a tricorn hat and red coat joins in the cheer. A blue curtain serves as the backdrop, and one child holds a booklet titled "The Book of Thetford."

Following a request from participating children, Thetford Powershift will have a new pitch at the Royal Norfolk Show—right on Main Avenue. Positioned alongside key exhibitors, the aim is to showcase Thetford’s pride and creativity to a wider audience.

The partnership is seeking sponsorship to support future projects. Businesses that choose to get involved will not only contribute to the lives of young people in Thetford but will also receive promotional opportunities and the chance to be part of something truly meaningful.
