Thetford Heritage Trust seeks trustees to help shape the town’s future

The newly formed Thetford Heritage Trust is seeking trustees to join its board as it embarks on an ambitious programme of work to unlock Thetford’s heritage potential.

A roadside welcome sign for Thetford stands on a small stone base at a residential junction. The sign features a decorative painted panel of a crowned historical figure wearing a red cloak and holding a staff or sword, positioned beneath a white signboard with bold lettering reading “THETFORD”.Behind the sign are rows of red-brick houses with tiled roofs, neatly trimmed hedges, and a quiet street curving away to the right. A tall, leafless tree covered in ivy stands to the left of the sign, alongside a modern streetlamp. The scene is brightly lit by clear sunshine under a blue sky, giving a crisp, calm suburban feel to the entrance of the town.

The charity has been set up to preserve and maintain the town’s historic buildings while developing an improved arts and cultural offering for the local community. This reflects Thetford’s rich heritage assets, including the Guildhall, Carnegie, King’s House and Gardens, Castle Park and more.

The Trust is looking to recruit five independent trustees with experience in areas such as charity governance, architectural heritage, finance, creative and performance arts, and fundraising. They will join five members of Thetford Town Council already appointed to the board.

Town Councillor and South West Norfolk MP Terry Jermy, recently elected as the Trust’s inaugural Chair, said:
“We are keen for the remaining trustees to join us as soon as possible as we embark on our mission. The Trust provides an exciting opportunity to embrace and develop Thetford’s fantastic heritage offer and build on the good work undertaken by Thetford Town Council over the past few years.

“I would encourage anyone with relevant skills and an interest in Thetford’s heritage to consider putting themselves forward. This is a great opportunity to be part of a team dedicated to unlocking the potential of Thetford’s heritage sites for future generations and developing a community heritage and arts centre for residents.”

Trustees will play a key role in guiding the strategic direction of the charity and are legally responsible for its governance. This includes ensuring the Trust achieves its objectives and operates in line with relevant legislation, including the Charities and Companies Acts.

The board will work together to act in the best interests of Thetford Heritage Trust and the people of Thetford.

The deadline for trustee applications is 19th April 2026, with interviews taking place during April and early May.
