The Offshoot Foundation, a film making charity, has been working with local councils, schools and community groups to empower young people in Thetford through the art of film making.

The charity began hosting workshops five years ago to offer local children a creative outlet. They’ve become a way to boost confidence, inclusion and connection.

Through storytelling and media, Offshoot gives young people, particularly those facing barriers, the tools to find their voice and feel seen. Their inclusive workshops bring together children from all backgrounds and abilities to collaborate, create and build friendships.

In Thetford, their work has included pop-up holiday clubs, youth-led media projects and confidence-building sessions supported by the Million Hours Fund. One local project brought together a games van, a coach and a group of young people to tackle local tensions through creativity. The result: three short films exploring themes of respect, inclusion and community pride.

Offshoot is now a regular feature in the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun programme at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre, offering film making mixed with food and fitness. Sessions regularly draw 10-15 participants, many of whom return each holiday. For some, it’s a highlight of their break. For others, it’s a chance to feel included, try new things and have fun.

Young people get hands-on experience with professional cameras, sound gear and editing software, producing movie trailers, stop-motion animations and short documentaries. Beyond the technology, workshops are designed to spark creativity and build confidence, teamwork and communication, helping participants thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Offshoot also works closely with local organisations including the Charles Burrell Centre, Mama D’s, Sports Ministry, JET and the Benjamin Foundation to support young people who are often excluded from traditional provision. One-to-one support ensures everyone can take part and form meaningful connections.

Film is the tool, but empowerment is the goal. Offshoot is helping young people across Thetford find their voice and believe in their potential.
