Diabetes can affect pets of all sizes, and our resident veterinary nurse Kate Springham explains the signs to look out for and how owners can manage the condition with confidence.

Diabetes is a condition that affects not only cats and dogs but smaller animals such as degus. Much as it does in humans, it occurs when the body can’t produce or effectively use insulin, and as a result, blood glucose levels rise and energy cannot be used by the body, leading to a multitude of symptoms.

What are the signs of diabetes?
➢ Increased thirst
➢ Increased urination
➢ Unexplained weight loss
➢ Increase in appetite
➢ Lethargy
➢ Cloudy eyes

Who is at risk?
Diabetes most commonly occurs in middle-aged to senior pets but can on rare occasions occur in young pets. Obesity can increase the risk of diabetes, especially in cats. Certain breeds of dog such as Beagles, Poodles and Samoyeds are predisposed to diabetes. If you are concerned about any of these signs with your pet, speak with your vet.

My pet has been diagnosed with diabetes, what can I do?
Getting the diagnosis that your pet has diabetes can be really daunting, and the thought of having to do daily injections for the foreseeable future can be overwhelming. I’m especially interested in diabetes and have done additional training in this area, so I’m confident I can provide great advice and support.

The condition is manageable with daily insulin injections once or twice a day. Weight management is important, with a dietary plan tailored to your pet’s specific needs, and regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential.

This is where I can help! Once your vet has made a diagnosis and initiated a treatment plan, I can help you manage this condition with confidence — from teaching you safe injection techniques or administering them on your behalf, to helping with weight management and monitoring blood glucose levels.
