Families are invited to enjoy a magical woodland adventure at Forestry England’s High Lodge, with the launch of a new Room on the Broom Trail in January 2026.

A young child in a blue coat with an orange hood stands smiling with arms outstretched in front of a colourful Forestry England information board titled “Flying high.” The board features illustrations of a witch on a broomstick, birds and bats, along with large painted wings that align with the child’s arms to create the effect of flying. The scene is set on a woodland path with autumn leaves, trees and undergrowth surrounding the sign.

Based on the much-loved story by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the trail has been created to mark the book’s 25th anniversary and will run throughout 2026. Designed for families with younger children, the trail combines outdoor exploration with storytelling, hands-on activities and simple forest facts.

Visitors can follow Witch and her friends through the forest, helping to track down her lost hat, bow and wand. Along the way, children will collect magical ingredients and complete activities at a series of themed trail points, encouraging them to look closely at the natural environment while engaging with the story.

“We’re thrilled to bring the magic of Room on the Broom to the forest,” said Kate Jackson, Marketing and Communications Manager. “This trail is a wonderful way for families to connect with nature, enjoy a beloved story, and create lasting memories together.”

Trail packs will be available to purchase for £4, including a themed lanyard, spell cards, stickers, pencil and a pop-out craft wand, allowing children to continue the experience beyond the trail itself.

The trail builds on Forestry England’s long-running partnership with Magic Light Pictures, which since 2014 has brought characters from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s books into woodland settings across the country. Further details are available at www.forestryengland.uk/room-on-the-broom
