Protect the streets with Thetford Community Speed Watch

Are you concerned about speeding on your street? Speeding by motorists is a regular concern of Thetford residents, but there is now a revived Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative in the town.

Two Community Speed Watch volunteers monitor traffic speed on a residential street. Both are wearing high-visibility jackets; one holds a speed radar gun showing a reading of 24 mph, while the other writes on a clipboard. The volunteer with the radar gun has their hood up with a fur trim. Traditional flint and brick terraced houses line the opposite side of the road, and a few cars are visible driving towards the camera under a blue sky with scattered clouds.

Three sites are currently approved by Norfolk Police, one on Earls Street and two on St John’s Way, with the potential for more to be added in future.

Community Speed Watch allows trained members of the public to monitor vehicle speeds using official speed detection equipment. Speeding vehicles are reported to Norfolk Police.

Any location suggested for CSW must be assessed for suitability and safety by Norfolk Police. If a site meets the required criteria, it will be approved and official signage is placed on nearby lampposts. At least three residents (preferably more) are needed to form a team, each giving around an hour of their time every week or so. Training and support are provided for volunteers.

Community Speed Watch isn’t about spying or snooping on neighbours – it’s about taking positive action to help improve safety and quality of life for everyone. While Norfolk’s road safety partners work together to reduce casualties and serious injuries, police officers simply can’t carry out enforcement checks in every community. CSW helps fill that gap.

This is not an enforcement scheme. Drivers caught speeding by CSW volunteers receive a warning letter from the police. If caught again anywhere in Norfolk, further action may be taken. To find out more or to join the Thetford CSW team, contact [email protected].
