On Saturday 21st June, Ancient House Junior History Club invites you to a free event day linked to Refugee Week, with the chance to take on the Moomins Turn 80 – Simple Acts Challenge.

You may be wondering what Refugee Week has to do with the Moomins. Penned by Tove Jansson in 1945, the first Moomin story The Moomins and the Great Flood mirrors the realities of displaced people seeking refuge. It centres on Moomintroll and Moominmamma, who are searching for the missing Moominpappa and a roof over their heads – in essence, a displaced family looking for a place to call home. They find it in Moominvalley and the Moominhouse, which becomes a symbol of shelter and belonging.
Visitors can listen to a story, try historic games, learn about those who moved to make Thetford their home, create crafts, plant a seed, sample sweets from around the world.
Enjoy short films curated by Counterpoints Arts and Other Cinemas – two organisations working across themes of racial justice, migration and climate. Free popcorn will be provided. All ages welcome and admission is free.
Ancient House is also working with Historic Royal Palaces to bring a new play about Princess Sophia Duleep Singh to Thetford.
On Friday 4th July, schools and home-educating young people aged 11+ are invited to a free day exploring her life and legacy. The day includes a performance of Fire! A Princess’ Guide to Burning Issues, a pop-up display and walking tour, plus interactive workshops featuring real artefacts.
Home-educating families and young people up to 25 years old can book on the Ancient House Museum website. Teachers can register by emailing: ancienthouse@norfolk.gov.uk
