Loneliness is a serious public health issue, with over 3.3 million adults in the UK reporting they feel lonely “often or always,” particularly older people and those with limited mobility. Research shows that loneliness can be as damaging as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, increasing the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and heart disease.
The Rickshaw Project aims to tackle this by offering free rides, helping individuals enjoy fresh air, meaningful conversation, and a renewed sense of connection. With the first rickshaw funded by Breckland Council, rides from local care homes will begin shortly. Looking ahead to next summer, there are plans to expand the project with scenic routes and river tours, turning every journey into a joyful and memorable experience.
“This project is about more than just transport,” said Martyn Bromley, CEO of Keystone Trust. “It’s about restoring freedom, sparking conversations, and creating uplifting moments.”
To bring the project to life, volunteers are urgently needed, including:
• Volunteer Riders and Companions
• A Lead Volunteer – a key role for someone who wants to take a lead in shaping the service, supporting other volunteers, and helping bring the project to life.
All volunteers will receive full training and support. Every role plays a vital part in improving someone’s day. The service is entirely free and provided by Keystone Trust, open to anyone in the local area who struggles to get out and about.
