This month, West Norfolk Aviation Society welcomed one of its own, David Allen, to share his experiences in gliding, often described as the purest form of flying.

Born into an aviation family, David’s passion for flight led him from microlights to shared aircraft ownership, before eventually joining the Fenland Gliding Club at RAF Marham. He explained the two main launch methods—winch launches, which can take a glider to 1,200 feet in seconds, and aero-tows, offering longer flights at higher altitudes.

David shared some memorable moments, including a mishap that involved breaching RAF security to retrieve a glider, leading to a stern briefing from the Station Commander. He also recalled a visit to Sutton Bank in Yorkshire, where the 1,000ft plateau provided perfect conditions for hill soaring and a stunning panoramic clubhouse view.
Sadly, Fenland Gliding Club closed due to RAF Marham’s modernisation in preparation for the F-35 Lightning II, but David’s enthusiasm for gliding remains strong.
West Norfolk Aviation Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month at Mundford Bowls Club (7:00–9:30pm), with free tea, coffee, and a buffet. To check upcoming topics, visit their website by searching ‘West Norfolk Aviation Society’. Newcomers are always welcome!
