Have you ever wanted to get into home composting but been put off because you thought it might be too difficult or time consuming?

Making your own compost at home is quick and easy

This summer, Norfolk County Council is challenging those assumptions and encouraging more people to give home composting a try.

On the Norfolk Recycles website, you’ll find lots of composting tips and tricks, plus a new and completely free Introduction to Composting course, with top tips for getting started. The Council also has a team of volunteer ‘Master Composters’ who are happy to help with any composting questions you may have to ask.

Thousands of people across Norfolk already compost at home. Laura from Caister, who only recently started, said, “I started home composting because it just feels like the natural thing to do when you have a garden! It just makes sense to make compost for free, from waste that would normally be thrown out. Composting is a great way to help reduce waste and get something awesome and useful for free!”

Laura recently started making her own compost

Alan from Reepham told us, “All my life I lived without a garden. On retirement I started living in a house with half an acre. I quickly realised there would be a good deal of garden waste, so I started composting. I don’t want to send away my garden waste – I want to return the nutrients to the garden, especially to my veg plot.”

Cathy from Heydon added: “Composting is an amazing process of transformation and easy to do – it just wants to happen! There is a wider environmental benefit too, as it reduces waste, pollution and energy by recycling this valuable resource at home. We need to work in harmony with natural processes. Composting is a practical and useful example of this, supporting the cycle of life.”
