The Safer Thetford Action Group meets once a quarter, bringing together representatives from the Town Council, the police, and various groups and agencies. The purpose of the meetings is to focus on general safety topics of concern to Thetford residents and businesses.

The meeting in early July included updates from the local police, street wardens, the Town Council, Community Speedwatch, Neighbourhood Watch and TYSS (Targeted Youth Support Services). There was also a discussion about Thetford’s CCTV system.
We were pleased to welcome Inspector Simon Jones and Sergeant Charlotte Gardiner (new lead for Thetford Police Safer Neighbourhood Team). Sgt Gardiner gave a brief update on activity: dealing with anti-social behaviour (ASB); street drinking; and a multi-agency focus on outlets selling illegal vapes, tobacco and alcohol to under-age customers.
Inspector Jones gave an overview of local police priorities. Reports of ASB and acquisitive crime appear to be in decline, though ASB remains a key priority. Staffing levels are an issue for local police, and while they do their best to cover the whole range of reports to the SNT, they can’t be everywhere. Street Warden Jaden Jermy outlined his work, often supporting the police.
The Street Warden’s focus is youth ASB (including cycling), street drinkers, the homeless and fly-tipping. Persuasion often works, but they can also issue Fixed Penalty Notices.
STAG welcomes input from residents and local businesses on safety in Thetford. Crimes and antisocial behaviour should be reported to the police, but general observations, queries or suggestions can be raised with STAG.
We are keen to hear from organisations that might be interested in future meetings. Email: stagforthetford@gmail.com or message via the STAG Facebook page.
