Claire Henwood, new minister at King Street Baptist Church

From the hidden villages of Suzhou and Tieling to the neon density of Nanjing and Beijing; from the vibrant multiculturalism of London to the pine-scented horizons of Thetford, the journey of Claire Henwood has rarely been a straight line. Her story has been shaped by changing landscapes but guided by a single, unchanging call.

After 15 years teaching in London schools, Claire sensed God’s call to ministry, which led her travelling through India and Thailand before eventually settling in mainland China.

In quiet rooms across towns and cities in China, sharing faith was often an intimate, whispered reality. There, a sanctuary was not a building but the shared breath of believers. Claire’s ministry was stripped of its finery, with no pulpits or pews, leaving only the raw power of a faith shared in secret.

After many years living there, extreme difficulties with the Chinese authorities made it clear the time had come to return to the UK. Claire returned in December 2019.

Returning to her hometown in North East London meant navigating rapid change. Gentrification had reshaped the area, and the congregation reflected the diversity of the world itself. In the shadow of Canary Wharf and the bustle of Westfield, the challenge became finding a common language for countless life stories. Ministry there was faith in high definition: diverse, noisy and urgent, set against the backdrop of a global pandemic and a series of lockdowns.

In 2022, Claire’s journey continued at Theydon Bois Baptist Church in Epping, near the end of the Central line. Here, her ministry focused on community life: local schools, village cafés and the ancient trees of Epping Forest. There, Claire felt the task was to keep the fire of the city alive in a setting where life felt more settled, yet no less in need of spiritual depth.

Since December 2025, Claire has begun a new chapter at King Street Baptist Church in Thetford, where deeper roots are now taking shape.
