Doctor Overy from School Lane Surgery in Thetford shares some tips for a healthier body and mind this year.

At the start of a new year, many of us begin to think about what we want life to look like in the months ahead. This is a welcome opportunity for all of us to take simple practical steps toward better wellbeing in 2026.

A good place to start is with movement. You do not need expensive equipment or a dramatic change in lifestyle to benefit from regular activity. A brisk walk around your neighbourhood, a gentle stretch each morning or a short session following an online routine can all make a real difference. The key is choosing something you enjoy so that it becomes a steady part of daily life. Invite a friend or family member along if you want company, as shared goals often help us keep going.

Healthy eating is another area where small adjustments can lead to big improvements. Try adding an extra portion of vegetables to your plate each day, choose water more often than sugary drinks and keep healthier snacks within easy reach. If time is short, prepare simple meals in advance so you have something nourishing ready when you need it.

Sleep is often overlooked but it has a major impact on mood, energy, and concentration. Aim for a calming routine before bed by reducing screen use, dimming lights, and allowing time to unwind. Keeping a regular bedtime and waking time helps your body settle into a natural rhythm. If worries keep you awake, try writing them down earlier in the evening or practising gentle breathing exercises.

Looking after your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health. The start of a new year can bring pressure to achieve many things at once. Instead focus on one or two changes that feel realistic. Celebrate progress rather than perfection. Make space for activities that lift your spirits whether that is reading, gardening, listening to music or spending time with people who support you. If you find yourself struggling please reach out. Our team is here to provide guidance and support.

It can also be helpful to review any routine checks or vaccinations you may be due. Keeping these up to date provides reassurance and helps prevent avoidable illness. If you are unsure about what you need please contact the surgery and we will be happy to advise.

As we step towards 2026 remember that every positive change begins with a single choice. You do not have to overhaul your life to see benefits. Consistent small actions build a foundation for lasting health. We hope these suggestions inspire you to approach the coming year with confidence curiosity and care for yourself.

From all of us at School Lane we wish you a bright and healthy start to the year ahead.
