Breckland Council’s crackdown on littering and fly-tipping has resulted in £1,650 in fines issued by the Environmental Enforcement Team.

On Thetford’s Abbey Estate, several unwanted items were dumped, despite being eligible for free disposal at the recycling centre. A member of the public identified the address responsible. Although the resident claimed to have hired a waste carrier, no details were provided, leading to a £500 fine.
Another incident involved a large amount of green waste, mostly moss, discarded on a roadside in Great Ellingham. A £400 fine was paid after a local landowner reported the vehicle involved, enabling the culprit to be traced.
In another case, a Melford Common resident was fined £500 for leaving garden fencing on a public footpath, causing obstruction and risk to the public. The individual refused to remove the fencing or arrange proper disposal.
Across the district, in Harling Woods, litter found near a secluded track was traced to a local business address. Investigations revealed an employee had been using the address for personal deliveries. The employee paid a £250 fine and is now under investigation by their employer.
Cllr Helen Crane, Executive Member for Waste, Environmental Health, Licensing & Sustainability, said, “Littering and fly-tipping continue to be a source of annoyance for our residents as well as damaging our beautiful district. Breckland Council is addressing the problem and will do everything we can to track down offenders. The information provided by residents is invaluable in identifying those responsible.”
