Firefighters Smash Fundraising Target With Three Peak Challenge

The Thetford Firefighters would like to share thanks to the public and local community who shared and donated to their page supporting The Firefighters Charity. On Sunday 3rd September the crew completed all three peaks with tremendous effort. All the adversity they came up against sadly meant this was not achieved within the 24 hour timeframe, but very close at 28.52 hours. Despite their mode of transport breaking down a total of nine times and a diversion of 1.5 hours on their way to Scafell Pike, the team are delighted to have finished. Jordan Boulton, speaking on behalf of the crew, said, “We feel disheartened but proud of the efforts to still power on and complete all three peaks no matter what the time. A huge thank you to our drivers Sam and Tomas who kept us going throughout, thank you to my Dad, Neil for his guidance and thank you to the local organisations and businesses who got on board to help make this all possible.”

Ben Nevis was the highest mountain at 1345 metres and the team found it the hardest to complete due to the steep, busy boulder paths. Going up tests your cardio endurance and leg power whereas coming down thumps your knees and ankles as you land from boulder to boulder. Steven Collins continued, “Awesome new scenery comes into view with every few steps and each mountain range provided its own character. We walked through a cascading river on Scafell Pike, through the edge of a waterfall on Ben Nevis and passed the most amazing lakes at Snowdon.” Travelling between mountains allowed legs and joints to recover somewhat but it was difficult to get anything more than scattered sleep and some food in a moving minibus. The two drivers allowed the climbers to switch off though whilst they took on the burden of the twisty British roads.

The team had support from Beez Leisure, Lawsons Estate Agents, Thetford Garden Centre, Traquinas Childcare, Upwell Royal British Legion, Northwold Football Club, Shadwell Estate, Thetford & District Charity Pool League, Nellies Grooming Parlour, East Anglia Swift Transport Ltd and Thetford Tesco Superstore.

Steven Collins added “The planning we put into the challenge really paid off, with the correct equipment, food and plenty of water. The team pulled together, and we had a great camaraderie. On reaching each summit we were ignited with the belief that we could push through the pain and sore legs including the blisters. There were times when each of us were feeling like it was too much on our bodies through joint ache, blisters, cramps or fatigue but the powerful thing of being in a tight team is that you push on through the pain and help lift each other’s spirits. It was the best feeling to complete our final mountain and have our support guys provide fresh hot pizza and a cold beer each. We all agreed that this truly was an amazing experience that filled us with pride and gratitude to all those that helped, supported and donated to a great cause.”

To achieve all three summits is an achievement itself, the team have taken encouragement from this and the goal to take on this challenge again, completing it in 24 hours has not been ruled out for the future. The team have raised £3135.00 to date, which will be donated to The Firefighters Charity. The Firefighters Charity supports current and previous serving firefighters across the country in crisis. Jordan says that to have exceeded their target of £2,000 is a testament to the fantastic community spirit in Thetford and Norfolk.
