On 13th February 2025, Engine Number 4000 returned to Thetford and its birthplace, the Charles Burrell & Sons Works, Minstergate.

Celebrating its centenary year, the engine was visited by the current Mayor, Cllr Chris Harvey, and four former Thetford Mayors.
Its appearance follows an extensive restoration over the last six or more years, which includes a new boiler and the refurbishment of all its other parts. The engine is owned by the Saunders Collection, with John Saunders serving as the vice president of the Charles Burrell Museum.

The engine left Thetford to re-enact its attendance at the King’s Lynn Mart, covering the 30-mile trip under its own steam.
Charles Burrell Museum is currently closed for winter maintenance, but will reopen on Sunday 20th April (Easter Sunday). The museum relies on the support of volunteers. If you have time to give, email: [email protected]
