Thetford’s central Post Office on the Market Place has now closed, ahead of its move to a new home on King Street. The building, originally opened in 1939, was held on a short-term contract from Royal Mail. The move allows for a modern, open-plan post office with its own permanent postmaster.

The former Thetford Post Office building, a large red-brick property with white-framed windows and a pitched roof, stands on the corner of the Market Place. is visible in the background to the left. A grey Audi is parked in front, and nearby shops line the street beneath a bright sky with scattered clouds.

The new location aims to open on Wednesday 26th November in the old Peacocks building. The new Post Office will open Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5.30pm, and will include a store serving cards, stationery and confectionery. Two new screened counters and an additional service point at the retail counter will enable customers to carry out postal and retail transactions in one place.

The move was originally planned for last summer, but was delayed due to a flood in the Peacocks building, which has been empty since 2021. In an open letter to customers, the Post Office apologised for the inconvenience that the closure may cause.

The post offices on Canon’s Walk and Anna Gurney Close remain open, and cash services can be accessed at the temporary Banking Hub in the Guildhall, which is open Monday to Friday. The Royal Mail sorting office at Market Place will remain unaffected, and customers can still collect undelivered mail from the existing site.
