The Post Office has abandoned plans for their new site in the old Peacocks shop on King Street, which was due to open at the end of last month. The disappointing news for residents comes after the town’s main Post Office closed at the end of October, after 86 years on the high street.

“Regrettably, due to unforeseen circumstances, Post Office Limited has decided not to proceed with a relocation of the branch at this current time,” said the Post Office, in a statement on 14th November, two weeks before the branch’s new opening date. “We are actively reviewing alternative options and will share further updates as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience the closure may cause, and hope that our customers will continue to use Post Office services.”
Thetford’s central Post Office on the Market Place closed in October The building, originally opened in 1939, was held on a short-term contract from Royal Mail. The dropping of new plans means the town centre is now without any Post Office services

“Thetford is the fourth largest settlement in Norfolk and to have no Post Office services available in the town centre is simply unacceptable,” said Terry Jermy, MP for South West Norfolk. “I call upon Post Office Ltd to make rapid progress on establishing a new permanent base in Thetford, so that my residents do not continue to suffer from their lack of forward planning.”
As the abandonment of the new site was unplanned, a commercial decision will be made on whether to seek a replacement for the closed service, and, under the Post Office’s Principles of Community Engagement, this will not be subject to public consultation.
For those looking to make use of the Post Office ahead of Christmas, branches on Canons Walk and Anna Gurney Close remain open. This year’s Christmas postage deadlines are Wednesday 17th December for 2nd Class post, and Saturday 20th December for 1st Class.
