Every year in the spring, toads wake up from their hibernation and make their way to their historical breeding pools to reproduce. In Thetford Forest, near Croxton, a population of Common Toads (and other amphibians) over-winter in the Devil’s Punchbowl area and move north towards their breeding pools near Fowlmere. However, this journey involves crossing Harling Drove, a forest road where they come into trouble with fast-moving vehicles and many lose their lives. As many of our amphibian populations are in freefall across the UK, we can’t afford to let these precious animals come to a sticky end.

In early 2024, the Devil’s Punchbowl Toad Patrol was set up to monitor Harling Drove and help any toads found on the road across to safety. In the first season, the patrol saved 3,200 toad, frog, and newt lives! The 2025 Toad Patrol season, which runs from February until April/May, is fast approaching. Despite the group’s best efforts, many toads are still being run over. They would really like to grow the group of volunteers so that they can increase coverage on the crossing. If you are able to spare an evening or two for a couple of hours a week, it would be a massive help!
All that is needed is a high-viz jacket, a head torch, and a bucket! You don’t need a super bright torch; a wide, even beam that covers the road is more important. Look for a torch that is waterproof in case of rain, runs for at least two hours, and is light to carry.
This is a really worthwhile activity where you’ll meet like-minded individuals, get out into the fresh air, and have the satisfaction of counting how many individuals you are saving over the season.
