Calling All Singers: New Barbershop Chorus in Thetford needs you!

A new barbershop chorus is being set up in Thetford by local singer Peter Chapman. This will focus on close-harmony singing at its best – no straw boaters or stripey waistcoats required!

Four men wearing matching black suits and light-coloured waistcoats perform in front of a red curtain. Each sings passionately into microphones, part of a barbershop-style vocal group.

Peter brings strong credentials. In the 1980s he helped form a chorus that went on to win the Small Chorus trophy in 1992, take silver in 1994, appear on the Late Late Show in Dublin, and reach the semi-finals of Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year in 1996. They became chorus champions in 1999, represented Great Britain in North America three times, and in 2004 were named Choir of the World at a major international choral festival in Llangollen, Wales. His work was supported by The British Association of Barbershop Singers, who support choirs across the country.

Peter and fellow organiser Richard now hope to build a friendly local group that enjoys the craft and discipline of barbershop while aiming high.

For a good example of the best around at the moment, have a listen to this performance, starring Peter, from 1999:
