Behind the scenes on Thetford Guildhall restoration

Work is currently underway to repair Thetford’s Guildhall, a Grade II listed building located in the town centre. This heritage and events venue requires extensive repairs due to deterioration identified in the clock tower and cupola, revealed by a series of surveys.

The exterior of an old clock tower undergoing restoration, with scaffolding and protective netting surrounding the structure. The ornate white clock face is weathered, with black hands positioned in the center. The surrounding architectural details, including decorative moldings and metal elements, show signs of wear and exposure to the elements.

As a listed building, all restoration work must be carried out sensitively to preserve the original design.

The restoration process began in October 2024, with teams preparing the site to begin repairs. Scaffolding has been erected to support the structure, allowing surveys and restoration work to take place safely on site.

The first stage of the project involved removing damaged cladding and timber down to the base level, eliminating any deteriorated sections and preparing the area for replacement with suitable materials. The clock mechanism has also been removed from the tower and taken off-site for refurbishment and servicing, with plans to reinstall it once the restoration is complete.

Several light bulbs illuminate the space, while plastic coverings are wrapped around some components. The surrounding clock faces, partially visible, allow natural light to filter through.

The team will repair all components of the tower, including the clock faces, surrounding supports and the cupola. They will also replace the dormer window on the side of the building, which was removed last year due to the extent of the repairs needed.
