Registered Veterinary Nurse Kate Springham explains why reducing stress and respecting animal welfare are central to her approach, and how home visits can help pets who find veterinary environments overwhelming.

A golden retriever lies comfortably on a carpet in a living room, looking towards the camera with a relaxed expression. A grey sofa with a checked blanket is visible in the background.

As a Registered Veterinary Nurse, my profession is built on animal welfare. Animal Rights Awareness Week (15th – 21st June) is a reminder that animals have the right to a life free from unnecessary fear, pain and distress.

Veterinary environments can be stressful for many animals. The smells, noises and sight of other species can all be overwhelming and lead to trigger stacking – this is where several stressors occur within a short period, leading to heightened stress. Once in a heightened state of stress, carrying out procedures can be very challenging and stressful for everyone involved.

In practice, many things are put in place to help minimise stress and fear, such as separate waiting areas for cats and dogs and using sedation when necessary. For some pets, however, the home environment is more suitable, allowing more time, familiarity and calm.

When visiting your pet in the comfort of their own home, I use cooperative care techniques, allowing pets to participate in their own handling. If a pet says “no”, I listen. By eliminating the high-stress car journey and the sensory overload of a waiting room, I respect a pet’s right to remain in their safe haven.

By bringing clinical care to the home, I’m able to prioritise your pet’s emotional wellbeing alongside their medical needs, ensuring they feel respected and safe in their own environment.

If your pet finds a trip to the vets overwhelming, I am here to help. Feel free to get in touch to discuss your pet’s needs and how I can provide a stress-free experience in the comfort of your home.
