Norfolk’s Master Composters are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. The volunteers have helped households across the county discover that composting is simple, practical and rewarding.

Three Master Composter volunteers stand beside a compost bin, with one holding a garden fork, promoting home composting and waste reduction.

Since 2006, hundreds of trained volunteers have contributed thousands of hours encouraging home composting across the county. They visit schools and run free events and webinars, all with the aim of getting more people into composting and showing how easy it can be.

What is composting and why should you start it?

Composting is when food scraps and garden waste break down naturally and turn into compost. Compost is a rich material that helps plants grow and improves the soil.

Composting can save you money by reducing the need to buy compost, helps your garden grow, and reduces waste.

What is on offer this year?

For anyone keen to get involved, there are plenty of resources available, many of them free.

Norfolk’s Master Composters are running summer events in person and online, with free places available to book via ticketsource.com/norfolk-master-composters.

Want to learn at your own pace? A free online Introduction to Composting course is available on the Norfolk Recycles website. The course covers everything from buying a bin and what to put in it, to how to use your finished compost.

And if you don’t own a bin? Not to worry – discounted bins are available from Thetford Recycling Centre (and most recycling centres across Norfolk), or you can order them online at www.getcomposting.com or by calling 0800 316 445.

The Master Composters are always looking for people to join them. Anyone over the age of 18 can become a Master Composter, even if they have never composted before and have no previous volunteering experience.

So what are you waiting for? Get into composting this summer!
